Energie Case StudyMulti award winning sustainability project features ‘Energie’ Solar
The “Ponte de Pedra” development in Porto has received national and European awards and been described as “a pioneering example that every promoter of social housing should follow.” Part of the Sustainable homes in Europe project that featured exemplar projects in Denmark, France, Italy and Portugal, Ponte de Pedra uses Thermodynamic Solar Energy to provide domestic hot water and heating to 101 dwellings comprising both two and three bedroom apartments over 11 buildings in 2 blocks. Each one of the 11 blocks utilises a 12 panel system feeding a 2000lt water reservoir.
‘Energie’ is substantially different to more conventional solar technologies in that it uses pressurised refrigerant to harvest heat from the surrounding atmosphere in a system that operates in all climatic conditions, even at night. The best traditional solar systems claim to provide up to 50% of domestic hot water requirements during an average year, ‘Energie’ is used here to supply all domestic hot water and heating requirements supplying water at a constant 55 degrees C. The project was monitored throughout the first year by the national university of Athens with both external and selected internal areas under constant review in a live tenanted situation. |
